    PAINT FINISH GUIDE

Flat, Eggshell, Satin, Semi-Gloss — Which Finish Is Right For Each Room?

The complete guide to choosing the right paint sheen for every surface in your home

Most homeowners spend hours agonizing over paint colors — and almost no time thinking about paint finish. That is a mistake. The finish you choose affects how the color looks in your actual lighting, how easy the surface is to clean, how long it lasts, and how imperfections in the wall are hidden or highlighted.

Two rooms painted the same color in different finishes will look noticeably different. And a beautiful color choice in the wrong finish for the room — flat paint in a kitchen, semi-gloss in a formal living room — can produce a result that disappoints no matter how good the color was.

This guide explains every finish type, what it looks like, and exactly which rooms and surfaces each one is right for.

    QUICK ANSWER

For most rooms: eggshell. For kitchens and bathrooms: satin. For trim and doors: semi-gloss. For ceilings: flat. For cabinets: semi-gloss or high-gloss.

Why Paint Finish Matters More Than Most People Realize

Paint finish — also called sheen — refers to how much light the dried paint surface reflects. Higher sheen means more light reflection, which makes colors appear brighter and more saturated but also highlights every surface imperfection. Lower sheen absorbs more light, creates a softer look, hides imperfections better, but is less durable and harder to clean.

The right finish for any given surface is a balance between aesthetics, durability, and the practical demands of how that surface gets used every day.

    The 6 Paint Finishes Explained

    Flat

Flat paint has virtually no sheen — it absorbs light completely, creating a velvety, non-reflective surface. This makes it exceptional at hiding imperfections: texture variations, old patch repairs, and surface irregularities all but disappear under flat paint. The downside is that it marks easily and is the most difficult interior finish to clean — scrubbing flat paint removes the finish along with the scuff.

Best for: Ceilings, formal dining rooms, adult bedrooms, low-traffic areas where hiding imperfections is more important than cleanability.

    Matte

Matte is essentially flat with a slight improvement in washability. It still creates a very low-sheen, sophisticated surface, but can tolerate light wiping better than true flat. Many premium interior paint lines offer matte as a step up from flat with very similar aesthetics but marginally better durability.

Best for: Living rooms, master bedrooms, hallways, and any room where you want the elegant look of flat but with slightly more practical durability.

    Eggshell

Eggshell — named for the barely-there sheen of an eggshell — is the most popular interior paint finish for good reason. It splits the difference between flat's hide-everything approach and satin's durability, delivering a subtle warmth and glow without looking shiny. It is noticeably more washable than flat and works beautifully in most living spaces.

Best for: Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, hallways — the workhorse interior finish for most rooms in most homes.

    Satin

Satin has a silky, medium sheen that makes colors appear slightly richer than eggshell. More importantly, it is significantly more durable and washable — it can be scrubbed without damaging the finish, making it the right choice anywhere walls get touched, splashed, or regularly wiped down. The more noticeable sheen does not work everywhere, but in the right rooms it looks polished and intentional.

Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms, laundry rooms, trim, mudrooms, and any high-traffic area that needs to be cleaned regularly.

    Semi-Gloss

Semi-gloss reflects significant light, creating a noticeable shine that makes surfaces look crisp and defined. It is very durable, moisture-resistant, and extremely easy to wipe clean — but the sheen will reveal every surface imperfection. Used on walls in living areas it tends to look commercial or institutional, but on trim, doors, and woodwork it creates the sharp contrast that defines a professional paint job.

Best for: Trim, baseboards, door frames, doors, bathroom walls in high-moisture applications, and kitchen cabinets when a lower-maintenance finish is preferred.

    High-Gloss

High-gloss reflects light like a mirror — it is dramatic, lacquer-like, and the most durable and washable of all finishes. It demands perfect surface preparation because every imperfection is visible under the high-reflection finish. Used selectively, it creates stunning visual impact on cabinets, front doors, and furniture. Used everywhere, it is overwhelming.

Best for: Kitchen and bathroom cabinets for a factory-smooth showroom look, front doors for dramatic curb appeal, and furniture painting where a lacquered finish is the goal.

    Common Finish Mistakes to Avoid

    • Flat paint in a kitchen or bathroom. It will not survive regular cleaning. Within months you will see permanent marks and wear patterns wherever the walls get touched or splashed.
    • Semi-gloss on living room walls. Unless you are going for a very specific contemporary look, the sheen will feel institutional and will highlight every surface imperfection on your walls.
    • Using the same finish on walls and trim. Varying the finish between walls (eggshell) and trim (semi-gloss) creates visual definition and makes the room feel finished. Same finish everywhere makes rooms look flat and undefined.
    • Ignoring the ceiling. Ceilings painted with wall eggshell instead of flat ceiling paint will show every roller mark and texture variation under light. Always use flat ceiling paint on ceilings.
